Is Dominus Automa for you?
The store calls Dominus Automa an automated idle MMORPG. The current Playtest makes that idea concrete. You choose what a persistent hero should work on, write its combat rules, and let the server carry them out while you are away. When you come back, you read the report and change whatever did not work.
That rhythm will sound familiar to anyone who enjoys tuning an idle game, except the Combat Matrix gives you more to think about than a timer and an upgrade button.
Metashift Labs gives the idea a personal origin. Lead developer Rafal wrote that full-time work and children had made scheduled raids feel like a second job. The team says it is building for working adults and parents who still enjoy MMO progression but cannot organize their lives around it. Developer origin post
Likely a fit
- You enjoy tuning rules and checking how they performed.
- Idle progress appeals to you, but you still want meaningful decisions.
- Character growth, crafting, loot, and repeated adjustment are the fun part.
- You are comfortable testing an early build and giving feedback.
Probably not yet
- You want a finished campaign and settled balance.
- You prefer direct control over every attack.
- You need the economy and social systems to be fully documented.
- You expect a Steam request to grant access immediately.
If the left column sounds like your kind of RPG tinkering, the Steam request makes sense. Players in the right column will probably get more from a later build. The economy and social features on the store page are still part of the wider plan, rather than a list of everything available today.
What can you play right now?
The multiplayer Playtest opened on August 7, and Metashift Labs says this run is scheduled through August 23. The full game still has a To be announced release date. Steam shows a Request Access button, so admission may take time. Current Steam listing · August 7 launch announcement
The launch post gives the current build a useful outline.
- 25
- levels
- 10
- locations
- Nearly 20
- enemy types
- 3
- bosses
Mage and Paladin make up the current class pair across those 25 levels, and the launch post specifically mentions a Paladin Tank route. Gathering, crafting, early equipment, progression, and balance are all part of this test. The July preview named six areas; the newer launch post counts 10 locations, so this page uses the later number.
Those counts belong to the August test build.
What playing actually looks like
On paper, a play session has a clear rhythm. You give the hero a job, decide how it should behave, and come back later to see whether the plan held up.
We use second-screen MMO as PlayerMemo shorthand for that rhythm. You make the consequential choices while you are present, the server-side hero carries out the run, and the next report gives you something concrete to revise. It is an editorial label, not an official genre name.
- Set a goalChoose combat progression, materials, equipment, or another available objective.
- Configure behaviorSet ability priorities and conditional responses in the Combat Matrix.
- Let the hero runThe server-side character can keep training, fighting, gathering, or crafting while you are away.
- Read the resultReturn to the report and inspect the progression and resources exposed by the current build.
- Adjust the strategyChange conditions, equipment, abilities, or destination, then start the next iteration.
The July preview says returning players receive an offline report. It also describes a hero that keeps training, fighting, gathering, or crafting on the server. Exact time limits and accumulation caps have not been published. Playtest details · Official overview
Combat Matrix decoded
The Combat Matrix turns your choices into rules the hero can follow. A condition can watch health or mana, distance and positioning, and the number of nearby opponents. The preview also mentions ability priorities, skill categories, chained actions, and rules that react to other players. Official Combat Matrix details
The Matrix has four working parts. A condition decides when a rule can run. The action says what the hero should try. Priority settles conflicts between eligible rules, and chains let one action lead into another.
This is where the game will live or die for players who enjoy automation. The published material shows a useful set of inputs, though it still leaves practical questions about debugging a failed run and seeing which rule fired. Those are good things to test once access opens.
Classes, attributes, and progression
The current test starts with two class directions.
Class 01
Mage
The ranged spellcasting option in the current class pair.
Class 02
Paladin
A melee holy-warrior direction, with a specifically named Paladin Tank path.
The July preview names four attributes, Intelligence, Vitality, Will, and Focus. It also mentions Weapon Mastery, ability unlocks, and early equipment. That gives players several dials to adjust beyond the character level itself. Detailed Playtest preview
There is not enough detail for a serious build guide yet. The announcements do not give complete skill trees, attribute formulas, mastery breakpoints, loot tables, or respec rules. For now, these systems tell you what can be tested, not how to finish a character.
Current Playtest vs long-term vision
The August test is much smaller than the game described on the store and developer site. The table keeps the playable build on the left and the longer-term plan on the right.
| Area | Current Playtest | Long-term official vision |
|---|---|---|
| Character options | Mage and Paladin; 25 current levels; early abilities, attributes, Weapon Mastery, and equipment | Broader tank, healer, and damage roles, more varied builds, and professions |
| World and combat | 10 locations, nearly 20 enemy types, 3 bosses; solo/group and PvE/PvP contexts described | A persistent shared world with larger multiplayer conflict and cooperation |
| Automation | Combat Matrix conditions, priorities, chains, offline activity, and return reports | Long-running heroes coordinating within a wider player-driven world |
| Craft and economy | Gathering, crafting, progression, and early itemization are under test | Expanded crafting, trading, and a player-driven economy |
| Social systems | Other-player-aware combat behavior is described; current depth is not documented | Guilds, group roles, territory-scale cooperation, and social coordination |
| Access | Controlled Steam Playtest request during the August test window | Full release date and commercial model remain unannounced |
The Reddit post gives the right-hand column a little more shape. The team imagines builds focused on healing, survival, positioning, debuffs, precise strikes, or sudden damage, along with group roles and professions. These are destination examples. The August build notes do not confirm the whole set. Developer origin post
The official developer site is useful for the broader plan and for its Gallery. Its alpha timing is older than the current Playtest information, so the dated Steam announcement and live store panel are the better places to check access.
Joining, platforms, and requirements
Steam handles access. Open the store listing, find Join the Dominus Automa Playtest, and choose Request Access. Applicants receive a notification when Metashift Labs admits more players. The page lists seven languages for the interface.
Windows
10/11 · 64-bit
Intel or AMD with SSE2; 4 GB RAM; DirectX 10 graphics; 2 GB storage (3 GB recommended); broadband.
macOS
12 or newer
Apple M1+ or Intel i5 2018+; 4 GB RAM; Metal graphics; 2 GB storage (3 GB recommended); broadband.
Availability
Seven languages
Interface support in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Polish, and Portuguese (Portugal). Steam currently marks full audio and subtitles for English only. Steam Deck compatibility: Unknown.
Both requirement lists call for broadband. Linux is not listed.
What remains unknown
Several answers would change whether someone should invest time in this Playtest.
Until Metashift Labs publishes those answers, they stay open. A new build note or a changed Steam access panel would be enough reason to revisit this briefing.
